good morning, everybody. we start off with a hard lesson for a middle school teen accused of taunting and harassing classmates at school and online. a 13 year old in some real legal trouble this morning after his school says enough is enough. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in morgan hill right now. the principal says bullies do not belong at britton middle school even with most of the bullying happening off campus. >> reporter: that's right. when students come to class this morning, they're going to get the message. the punishment may sound harsh but this student was warned before that his behavior was way out of hand and this morning parents are feeling pretty good about the outcome that the bully was stopped in his track. the 13-year-old cited with a juvenile contact citation. morgan hill police say for a juvenile that's the same as an arrest. investigators say that britton middle school student harassed two 13-year-old classmates

verbally, physically and even taunting them. one shooting plastic bbs at them, taunting them online. a school resource officer tried to warn the boy. >> shook his head. stated he understood. knew that his behavior was wrong and then went home and contacted the victims again through text messages, facebook and in person. >> reporter: the principal says a strong zero tolerance message is really what's needed when teachers and parents want to keep kids safe on school campuses. the student has also been disciplined at school. he's going to be sent to the juvenile court system for an upcoming hearing with his parents. reporting live in morgan hill, christie smith, "today in the bay." one man under arrest this morning in connection with a home invasion robbery of an elderly san jose couple. police are still looking for two other suspects. the three men reportedly forced their way into a home monday

night, tied up the couple in their 70s and then ransacked their home. they also stole the couple's two cars. the cars were recovered wednesday. police say they hope evidence inside those cars could lead them to the other suspects. police meantime in sacramento have finally caught up with a man wanted for burglary in contra costa county. he held a woman hostage in her home in sacramento on wednesday after trying to escape from a chp officer who attempted to pull him over. now the woman was able to escape and he surrendered to police a short time later. he was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, false imprisonment, burglary and that outstanding warrant. a follow-up to a story we first brought you yesterday. it appears age may be to blame for a water main break in a marin county neighborhood. this is what it looked like yesterday morning. hundreds of thousands of gallons of water gushed on this road for

about 90 minutes. water district officials say the four-inch pipe that burst is more than 60 years old and a valve may have broken. >> it's 6:04. good morning to you. welcome to friday. christina loren says it will be a nice day outside to get out and enjoy warmer temperatures. >> warmer temperatures and showers as well. something for everybody in today's forecast. we lose that warmth as of tomorrow. just want to start with this live picture. you can clearly see fog settling in to the city by the bay and we'll likely get flight delays out of this fog. want to point out where we have light shower activity right now. mostly over the east bay. you can see the general nature of these showers. i set this back three hours. at this point they are starting to thin out. that's good news. however that fog is settling in so watch out for deep pockets. a report from napa someone could only see for 200 feet on the roads out there. you really want to travel cautiously. it's a give and take scenario.

lose showers. high pressure builds in for a short time and we get the thick dense fog to the surface. 4:00 p.m., 67 degrees inland. comfortable conditions there. bayside, 66. 65 degrees for you at the coast. hate to break it to you. we lose the warmth and keep the showers for tomorrow. i'm going to time out this system and let you know when you can get outdoors. one day looking better than the other for the weekend. let's check the drive. hey, mike. >> hello, christina. hello, fog. this is san jose. 280 and highway 17. the headlights you see glowing ones northbound 280 coming up underneath that 17/880 interchange. on the maps i have drawn an arrow to show you the same stretch where we saw headlights. slowing right at the interchange. lit up orange here on my map. that's where traffic and weather index shows there's fog creeping in through that earlier shot. an issue for highway 85 much of the morning and continues to be more widespread and as that traffic flow starts to kick in for north 101 like i show you here or 87 coming into downtown, we see more slowing because of

volume increasing. fog would complicate things. also an issue through the tri-valley fog there for parts of livermore and pleasanton. highway 84. although no unusual patterns here. we see typical slowing out of altamont pass. slowing across the inline for the bay bridge. look at traffic flow with a live look. you see cash lanes now coming off that bay bridge toll plaza starting to back up a tad bit. we may see metering lights in another 15 to 20 minutes but we'll see friday sort of based on traffic as it develops and we'll send with this look here and show you the north bay in the next report. back to you. the grace period is over in san francisco. now you have to start feeding those meters on sundays starting this sunday you will get a ticket if you overstay your meter. tickets are about $72 downtown and $62 in other parts of san francisco. the city's 29,000 meters will be active from noon until 6:00 on

following the company's financial reports down $63 or 12%. that's $47 billion in market capitalization that ceased to exists after a couple hours of trading. quite possibly the worst one-day loss in silicon valley history. apple said last night it performed 72% more fact ory audits than this time last year. in that 1.5 million workers it found 70 child workers at a subcontractor. that's .004%. what sounds like a big number. it's technically small by scale. a new app hit the app store thursday morning. it's video for twitter. here's behind the scenes in our control room. twitter is 140 letters. this is six seconds of video. it loops so you have to keep it short. kind of like instagram for video.

"today in the bay's" bob redell is out there with the high racing rpms at the racetrack and has a look at the excitement for you. bob, take it away. >> reporter: jon and marla, you're looking at some of the monster energy supercross athletes hitting some serious air probably in the range of 60 to 65 feet. this is something i would do but clearly i just don't want to get dirty. i was looking at this. dakota will be out here competing tomorrow. you guys are a little crazy.

i mean that as a compliment. am i right on that? >> for sure. we're looking for adrenaline whether it be motocross or snowboarding. this does it for us. >> reporter: you need that dopamine rush. what do you do to push it to the limit to get that adrenaline rush. >> putting in time of being comfortable. we look like adrenaline junkies to you guys but we've been doing it for a long time. it's normal. it's hard. >> reporter: your pr team likes to push this as one of the most physically demanding sports out there period. i know there are other athletes that would argue their sport is more demanding. what would be your argument for this sport? >> every athlete in every sport pushes it to the limit no matter what it is. i think our race time for sure works the body harder than most sports. they just take it differently and different aspects of the

about. rain on the radar. a spare the air day in place and the bay area air quality management district spare the air.org put it on my facebook page. the reason we're sparing the air and i get the word out. they say we had good rainfall in the south bay. didn't get all that much in the north bay or the east bay. it wasn't enough to flush out the fine particulate matter. the fog is settling in. transitioning from showers now to thick pockets of fog. we still have shower activity up in san francisco. this just developed over the past five minutes. we'll continue to update you tracking showers every five to ten minutes. i think fog will be more of a factor at this point for your morning drive. it never ceases to amaze me how quickly fog can develop around here. we stop the clock on future cast. expecting some deep pockets at that point. sunshine between 10:00 and 2:00 staying nice and dry for greater bay area and then as we head throughout the second half of the day, a few more showers will

ride onshore in the north bay and south bay. two competing systems working against each other. first one coming up from the south. this system is keeping us nice and mild. subtropical showers coming in but look at los angeles. just getting slammed with heavy rain. if you are headed over the grapevine, travel cautiously. just take it easy as you head down south on the 5. another system coming in. a cold system. this is going to impact us more so for tomorrow bringing in a cold rush of air. temperatures are going to fall by 10 degrees. we're also going to get showers out of it. we stop clock on future cast at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. getting a little action at that point. what i can tell you is get outdoors on saturday. you'll have ample opportunity to do so. look at that. we stop the clock at 2:00 p.m. mostly sunny conditions. and then on sunday we'll have showers beyond areas of drizzle. similar to what we're getting out there right now. as you put on your sunday best for church, just make sure you're ready to compete with a little bit of drizzle as you make your way out to the car.

keep that in mind. 68 degrees for gilroy today. 64 in los gatos. 62 comfy conditions in san francisco. temperatures running about five to ten degrees above average. tomorrow our temperatures will fall back to average. we'll keep showers in the mix for the first part of saturday. drizzly to start on sunday. and then monday and tuesday warm, dry stretch of weather starts to develop. we'll be back in the low 60s by thursday of next week. stay nice and dry. hopefully all of the way through super bowl sunday for your barbecue plans. let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning, christina. we do have a dramatically changing situation over the last few minutes. we do have earlier debris reported and then a stalled vehicle reported and now a crash north 238 at 880. it sounds like the situation did change as someone got stuck there and then there was a crash. no details on injuries. i'm tracking this but quickly showing the backup over the last five minutes coming off the castro valley y heading up toward 880. north 880 approaching the same

interchange in countercommute. you see the slowing so that's an added issue. slick roadways could complicate things and build for the southbound side as well. we're watching the entire highway if you are heading into or through that area track with me and also follow me on twitter because i'll send those updates if there's anything significant going on. over here sunol slowing south. let me show you the changing conditions with our live look out there. this sunol southbound 680 around the golf course. earlier today we couldn't even see the incline because there were low clouds and fog through the area. that lifted a bit through this particular stretch but as christina said and on maps it shows there's more fog to deal with now. things are thicker and we see slowing where things tick down toward 40 toward north livermore avenue. a typical build but orange all over the place. thicker fog developing here north through brentwood and concord. we do see our road weather index showing that. 680 interstate 80 will get hit

nasdaq and the new york stock exchange. of course we give you more bang for your buck. it's friday, january 25th. good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. we'll check in with scott mcgrew as new numbers come in from wall street. >> first we have a look at local news here this morning. san jose police on the lookout for a group of suspects involved in a deadly stabbing. this marks the city's second homicide in just two days. the male victim was found stabbed multiple times near southside drive at hope street in south san jose. he was taken to regional medical center where he later died. investigators say four to five men approached that victim and attacked him last night just before 8:30. police at this hour still trying to figure out exactly what the motive was and whether this stabbing was gang related. >> typically in a gang related incident we'll hear some sort of gang epithets being uttered.

none of our witnesses reported hearing anything like that. although when you have a group of people that attack someone, it certainly sounds that way. we don't know yet. it's too early to tell. >> we can tell you that the suspects were last seen leaving that scene driving a gray colored van. the oakland teen who killed his adoptive parents last year is expected to be sentenced today. moses kamin was 16 years old when he strangled susan poff and robert kamin. he killed them because he didn't want to deal with them after they would be upset after he was suspended from school for smoking marijuana. the owner is now suing the department claiming his rights were violated. he wants the court to order a temporary injunction to keep his equipment at the site during the

ongoing legal battle. time now is 6:31. you know what i like to call these days? a smorgasbord. >> always gets me happier when i hear you say those words. it means i'm pleasing most of the people this time. temperatures are nice and mild to start. hard to please all of the people all the time as you know when to comes to weather in the bay area. it's a give and take scenario. showers and slick conditions. fog developing. we're still going to hit highs close to 70 degrees today which means you can give your heater a break. you can save money on that pg&e bill and we're going to see better air quality as more showers come through the area. nonetheless it's a spare the air day. not enough rain to purify all of that haze because we had a dry month. so far it's been dry and that particulate matter accumulating for january. better improvement in that department in particular as we head throughout tonight. 11:00 a.m. starting to dry out.

cloud cover lingering. creeping through the delta we'll see that tule fog for today and later on in the central valley. travel cautiously. not the greatest travel conditions on this friday. stop the clock at 1:00 p.m. in the bay area. showers lingering over coastal mountains and western facing slopes from the area of low pressure sneaking from the south. stop the clock at 8:00. we'll see things thin out. tomorrow morning lingering activity and then we'll clear out just in time for you to get outdoors on saturday afternoon. looking like a good weekend. 67 degrees inland. 66 bayside. let's check the drive with mike. >> mist, drizzle and fog and rain hit the roads. slick conditions and south bay over the course of the morning last two hours have seen a number of spinouts and single car accidents. we're looking at volume building for 101 northbound. here's the stretch we're talking about. the orange down into the 40s and

maybe below that in some spots heading north through that congestion. north 680 out of the same area slow. the orange over on the right side may be a clue with fog drifting through there as well as it is through much of the south bay. north 280 as you approach downtown right around the 7th street exit, reports of a three car crash there. no injuries reported but some drivers have called chp saying people involved there are walking around so be very careful as you travel through downtown until chp gets everybody and everything off the shoulder. sounds like one lane might be affected. expect slowing because you are heading up into more fog. orange painted around here throughout the south bay for 101, 85, 87, all shows thick fog through these portions of the south bay and also through the santa cruz mountains. keep that in mind. a live look at the san mateo bridge shows you the bridge does disappear as far as traffic flow on the flat section. visibility for drivers is okay. you can see that far ahead of you which means you're all right for the immediate area. keep that in mind farther north.

the bay bridge we see a backup forming in just a few of the lanes. it looks like metering lights are turned on affecting fastrak lanes but cash lanes are smooth. you have to wait until you get on the span. upper deck moves smoothly into the city. back to you. apple shares in focus once again this morning a day after the popular stock was crushed by disappointed investors. business and tech reporter scott mcgrew joins us live from the newsroom. people have apple stock and don't know it. >> if you have a 401(k), you most likely do, or a retirement system for california public workers, they have so much stock in apple they can pressure the company from time to time on board issues. everybody cares about the cupertino company one way or another. a look at the nasdaq opened this morning. apple such a big part of the nasdaq it dragged the whole index lower yesterday. 12% lower for apple stocks. it cut more than $40 billion out

of the company's overall value. this morning apple is trading ever so slightly lower. about $2. what this seems to say to us particularly on very little volume at $448.50 is that this is where apple investors think apple ought to be. keep in mind not that long ago we were talking about a $700 apple share potentially. it didn't get quite that high. that's what people were talking about. if someone were going to buy in thinking apple shares were on sale right now, now would be the time to do it and we're not seeing it. >> okay. thanks, scott. we'll of course anticipate what's going to happen there. thank you so much. time now is 6:36. still ahead, a stronger strain of norovirus making its way to the united states. taking you outside and a live look at the city by the bay. a nice shot. look at that dark blue sky there with plenty of fog and cloud

today a judge deciding whether a high profile rape case will be closed to the public. two high school football players in ohio are being charged with raping a 16-year-old girl after an alcohol fueled party back in

august. other party goers later posted pictures of the unconscious victim on instagram. the victim, one of the defendants and prosecutors want next month's trial closed. in washington, d.c., thousands of abortion opponents will gather for an annual protest today. they'll gather at the national mall for a rally and then they will hold what's called the march for life. the u.s. supreme court legalized abortion in 1973. the cdc says a new strain of norovirus reached the united states from australia. the cdc says the bug which causes massive vomiting accounting for 58% of outbreaks nationwide just last month. it's highly contagious and it can be deadly. the norovirus season typically runs from november through march and it peaks right now in january. it is 6:40. coming up, a little boy nearly lured away from an east bay school by a man in a car.

they are going to get the message that bullying and cyberbullying won't be tolerated here. this student was warned to stop it. the nasty behavior continued and in the end, morgan hill police arrested and cited the 13 year old for bullying two other boys. the bully would harass them on the phone, threaten them in person by text or on facebook. the bullying had apparently been going on for a couple months. the principal says that bullies just don't belong at school even when most of the bullying is off campus it can have an effect on campus. parents are glad the school and police finally put a stop to it. >> all of us, i think, have been bullied at some point or attempted to have been bullied by somebody and it's not fun. we'll never forget it. >> reporter: the morgan hill police tell us that the teen tried to get the two others to use marijuana and when they

declined the relationship was severed. the student was disciplined at school. we're told that he's going to have a hearing in juvenile court system with his parents and the police chief here in morgan hill is also asking any other students who may have been bullied to go ahead and come forward. reporting live in morgan hill, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> meantime, more bullying to tell you about. school officials in the east bay right now investigating another extreme bullying incident that ended up sending another student to the hospital with serious head injuries. had to be flown to that hospital. the principal of freedom high school in oakley says a girl attacked one of her classmates in the cafeteria on thursday after planning this fight with friends on instagram. the victim hit her head and had to be air lifted to a nearby hospital. the girl who attacked her was arrested on suspicion of felony battery. according to a pew research study on cyberbullying, 14 to 17-year-old teens experience the most bullying.

girls report more online harassment but most teens think bullying happens more offline and in school. the push to stop cyberbullying really picked up speed when the governor signed the bill into law introduced by san jose assembly woman norah compos. the bill allowed schools to us is suspend students who use social networking sites off campus to bully others. we're watching the weather for you as we give you a live look outside. that's san rafael with traffic picking up in mist and rain. you can see we've had rain all week long. the question now is will it linger through the weekend? >> the woman who can answer that question is meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> i guess that's me. good morning to you. cue the weather woman. meteorologist in my case. we have a good looking day shaping up. that's a tough question to answer. i'm going to do my best. i think i have a good handle on what is to come for the weekend. we have this really bizarre pattern out there. this morning temperatures are

running mild. mid 50s in some cities. you saw the picture of san francisco fogged in. likely getting flight delays out of sfo. we'll let you know when that happens. this is san jose. just as much fog to contend with on your morning drive. give yourself plenty of time. highways still on the slick side. all of the particles on that drive with mike in just a moment. want to point out before you head out the front door, not a good morning to go racing out. deep pockets of fog developing in the north bay. fog drifts around. even if your city is not reporting reduced visibility, doesn't mean you won't drive through a pithick pocket of fogn the way to work. looking at the radar starting to thin out when it comes to showers that will be the case. what's happening is two competing systems. one creeping up from the south. this is a warm system. it's bringing in subtropical moisture. through tonight another area of low pressure drops in from the north. a cold front is going to drop

the temperatures s substantiall. not too bad in livermore. 65 in san jose. 64 degrees in los gatos. want to spend extra time on your seven-day outlook to help you plan around those showers. this is what we're thinking right now. 65 degrees today. down to 56 tomorrow. a few showers in the morning. i say after 10:00 a.m. fair game for getting outdoors without having to dodge showers. that's the good news. we'll clear out just in time for saturday afternoon for outdoor activities. cool enough for a jacket. you can get outdoors. on sunday expecting maybe a stray isolated shower from time to time. nothing heavy. if you are heading out to church on sunday morning, you might drive through some thick pockets and have to use the windshield wipers. by monday drying out significantly. fog and drizzle in the forecast both monday and tuesday morning and then wednesday into thursday, abundant sunshine. temps back in the 60s and hopefully we'll maintain that stretch of fair weather all of the way through super bowl sunday. so we'll talk more about that coming up.

6:48. we'll check that drive. i promise you mike would be in. here he is. >> just because you called. otherwise i would still be sleeping. folks, you expect friday light. here is an unexpected slowdown we have. unusually heavy coming off castro valley the y here 580 and 238. earlier crash and debris on the northbound side of 238 caused this backup. it has cleared. another accident northbound 880 countercommute caused unusual slowing out of hayward. that just cleared as well. there's residual slowing in some areas that you don't expect to see that much slowing this time on a friday. then your traditional pattern kicks in south for 880 although here at davis we do have a new crash on the southbound side of the nimitz. watch for slowing as you head past marina and davis. we look at 680 and fog through the tri-valley that christina was talking about and farther north through concord. no unusual patterns as far as slowing for that section. over here south bay for northbound 101. a smooth drive. we have slowing now and orange

on the map is a cue to fog that we have the integrated systems that will affect your drive on 101 through morgan hill and 85 up through san jose. more slowing for north 87 up toward the earlier crash scene north 280 around that interchange we have activity and three cars involved in that crash. no injuries reported. a lot of activity. now we see slowing for 280 and 87 coming into the area and that fog kind of creeping around. now we'll get to live shots that i skipped a second ago. we're looking here to san mateo bridge. a nice easy drive although an earlier crash cleared that's why i downplayed it in my report. i haven't seen any delays and we do see a bit of haze and mist. you can see okay as far as drive. you can see halfway across that flat section. that's good. peninsula easy drive there. we'll get another look at the bay bridge toll plaza to end this report. the toll plaza at the bay bridge shows a nice easy light drive. we had backups. meteringi inlights are on. east shore freeway flows at 50.

that's great as the sun comes up. back to you. >> we'll take it. thank you very much. parents this morning in antioch being warned of an an attempted kidnapping outside of a school. yesterday afternoon a man tried to lure a fifth grade boy into his car. this happened after classes ended at sutter elementary school. the boy widely said i don't know you and then quickly walked away. the suspect was last seen in a parking lot of a nearby park. he was driving a light blue '70s era style car. san mateo county will host its first buyback program this weekend. gun buybacks have been held in several cities in the bay area recently with a very positive response. in fact, marin event ran out of money. the san mateo county event will be held tomorrow at the fairgrounds. gun owners will get $100 cash in exchange for handguns, shotguns and rifles and $200 for assault

weapons. ed lee and police taking steps to make sure 49er fans don't get out of control for the night of the super bowl. city officials hoping to avoid a repeat of this. you can see all of that violence and crazy vandalism after the giants ended up winning the world series last year. city officials plan to meet with small businesses to talk about some ideas. the mayor also warning bars to be careful how much alcohol they'll be serving and say they may ask some bars to stop selling alcohol all together at the end of the game. several streets will be shut down and blocked off to cars and police will be out in force. it's 6:52. a last-ditch effort to keep kings in sacramento could involve ellison. he'll meet with sacramento mayor kevin johnson about trying to purchase the kings. johnson is trying to gather investors to keep the team from moving to seattle. ellison has the money to help

and he's interested in basketball. he's worth $41 billion and unsuccessfully tried to buy golden state warriors in 2010. >> facebook ceo mark zuckerberg planning to host a fund-raiser for governor of new jersey chris christie. this apparently is zuckerberg's first time hosting a political fund-raiser. tickets $3,800 per person. at this point he hasn't declared a preference for a political party. the facebook founder met with president obama twice including a town hall meeting at facebook. it's gadget friday. scott mcgrew has a cool thing to make your tv cooler than you think. >> i know someone at home, one of our administrators say the tv is backwards. it's supposed to be. you're familiar with internet enabled television. they stream netflix and hulu.

you don't have to buy a new television. you can hook up an internet enabled dvd player. manufacturers are shrinking this technology down to this stick. this is a smart stick from a company that is powered by google. there are things like hulu and netflix that you can get. those do require a subscription but they are good services particularly hulu. it's worth it. i want to walk you through the installation process. you take this and find your hdmi port in the back and you do that. that's pretty much it. >> i can do that. >> if i need to review, i can do it one more time. it's 50 bucks and plugs into an open port on hdmi. i like the concept of this one. i had trouble with the remote on this one. you have to push the remote button more than twice, you give up. but the concept is excellent.
